The End of an Era: Saying Good Bye to San Diego Stadium

The image of an empty stadium isn’t as alien these days yet seeing the thousands of blue seats sitting vacant at SDCCU Stadium hits a little different.
Unlike across the country, sports fans in San Diego aren’t looking forward to the day when they’ll be able to return to the once home of the San Diego Padres, Chargers and now San Diego State Aztecs — simply because that day won’t ever come.
Here are images from the final press tour of the stadium before demolition began.

The dying, yellow grass is the most obvious sign that SDCCU Stadium’s days are numbered as demolition is set to begin at the end of August, 2020.

The concrete halo of lights that encircles three-quarters of the stadium is a perfect example of how the designer created concrete forms that work in harmony with eachother.

A new era awaits the Mission Valley site. As construction of the new stadium begins, the past looms large, though not for much longer.
